Identify A Bat Problem

Bats are very beneficial to humans. One large bat colony may consume up to 500,000 pounds of insects in one night. Bats hunt common pests including mosquitoes, flies, cockroaches, beetles, and moths.

Appearance & Habitat

There are many species of bats throughout the world. The most common bats found in the area would be the little brown bat and the big brown bat. These bats are relatively small and share very similar characteristics.

  • Wingspan of 9-15 inches
  • Wings that resemble broad webbed hands
  • Short legs with sharp claws
  • Large ears
  • Fur that ranges in color from light tan or yellowish, to dark brown and black

Bats will roost in groups numbering in the millions. They will use their feet to cling upside down to the ceiling or walls of their nesting areas. Commonly, bats will roost in caves, hollow trees, and buildings. When dusk arrives the bats will awaken and fly out of their roosting area to hunt for insects. Bats prefer to roost near ponds, lakes, or pools. Inside homes bats will roost inside of attics, chimneys, and walls, among other areas.

Entry

Bats will enter homes with the hope of finding a safe and dark roosting area. They will find sanctuary within attics, walls, and chimneys. During the summer months, bat pups are learning to fly and may accidentally enter buildings through open doors or windows.

Damage

Bats and humans coexist fairly peacefully. When you find bats in the attic, or bats in the chimney, the damages will not be so peaceful. One colony of bats can create a great mess and health hazards within your home. Bat guano will create a musky smell in your home and stain drywall beyond repair. Furthermore, bat guano can harbor dangerous fungal spores that can cause severe illnesses.

Diseases

Bats are a known carrier of rabies, and their guano can harbor fungal spores including histoplasmosis. The symptoms vary greatly, but the disease will primarily affect the lungs. When bat guano is harboring said fungal spores and is disturbed, one may inhale the dust/fungal spores, creating health problems.
